Remarkably, Red Ledges is the only development in the world to bring together the likes of sports legends Jack Nicklaus, Cliff Drysdale and Jim McLean to create an exceptional recreational and sporting package for our members. Consider the resumes of these three giants in their fields:
Jack Nicklaus. No name is more synonymous with greatness in the sport of golf than Jack Nicklaus, and no single person has changed the face of the sport more, as a player, designer, philanthropist, and good-will ambassador. Jack has been named "Golfer of the Century" or "Golfer of the Millennium" by almost every major golf publication in the world. He was also named Individual Male Athlete of the Century by Sports Illustrated, and one of the 10 Greatest Athletes of the Century by ESPN. In 2001, Jack was honored with the first–ever ESPY Lifetime Achievement Award, and he became the first golfer–and only the third athlete–to receive the Vince Lombardi Award of Excellence. In November 2005, the Golden Bear was honored by President Bush at the White House with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given to any U.S. civilian.
The legacy Jack has left as a player can be rivaled only by the legacy he is leaving as a golf-course designer, businessman and philanthropist. Jack was named GolfWorld's Architect of the Year in 1993, and in 1999, Golf Digest named him the world's leading active designer. In February 2005, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America recognized Jack with its highest honor, The Old Tom Morris Award. He has earned numerous awards and accolades since. We are fortunate to enjoy the work of this true master of the game in the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Red Ledges.
Cliff Drysdale. Both on and off the court, Cliff is one of the most popular personalities in the international tennis community. Cliff represented his homeland of South Africa in 45 Davis Cup matches over a six-year period. In 1972, Cliff teamed with Roger Taylor to win the U.S. Open doubles crown. They defeated the formidable team of Legends Owen Davidson and John Newcombe in three sets.
The highlight of Cliff's singles career was reaching the final round of the 1965 U.S. Championships. He went on to be ranked several times in the world's top ten in singles and he earned his way to being number one in the world on the senior tour in 1989.
Throughout his celebrated career, he netted 35 singles and 24 doubles titles. Another title he proudly held off the courts was that of founder and first President of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He is also the game's preeminent tennis announcer, going from making the shots to calling them. His insightful tennis commentary makes him a popular personality on ABC Sports and ESPN, and on the pages of Tennis Magazine where he is a contributing writer.
His tennis instruction company has opened 15 Cliff Drysdale Tennis Schools to date. His school here at Red Ledges is his first high-altitude training facility, and the first of its kind in the Mountain West.
Jim McLean. One of the game's master teachers, Jim McLean enjoys an international reputation as a golf instructor and owner of the Jim McLean Golf Schools, perhaps the finest and most respected in the world. Jim is probably best known for his research on the golf swing and his work on The X-Factor®, which describes in detail body motions, body angles and body positions. The X-Factor® and Y-Factor® are just a few terms Jim has coined over the last 3 decades of golf research. His training videos are number-one all-time bestsellers.
Jim's playing achievements include being one of the few people to qualify for the US Junior, the US Amateur (4 times), the US Open (2 times), and the US Senior Open and also be a contestant in the Masters, where he made the cut. Winner of the Northwest Open and 3-time winner of the Pacific Northwest Amateur, Jim qualified for the National Club Pro Championships ten times. He also was an All-American at the University of Houston, where he graduated with a B.A. in Economics.
Jim has been an instruction editor for Golf Digest since 1997 and instruction editor and advisor for The Golf Channel since its inception in 1995. Jim appears regularly on The Golf Channel Academy. He was Master Instructor for Golf Magazine from 1990 to 1997, and was an instruction writer for Golf Illustrated. Jim has taught more than 100 PGA Tour, LPGA and Senior PGA Tour players and has also worked extensively with five junior golfers who reached the number-one spot at the National Rankings. Red Ledges is home to one of the illustrious Jim McLean Golf Schools, both onsite and on Main Street in Park City, where an impressive indoor training facility keeps members' game fresh all year long.
