Supporting Conservation
and Experiencing the Best Trails

In 2021, Red Ledges and Utah Open Lands partnered to protect 395-acres of stunning open space in Heber Valley—now known as the Red Ledges Nature Preserve. This preserve isn’t just beautiful (though it certainly is), it’s also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including mule deer, elk, red-tailed and Swainson’s hawks, spotted towhees, and northern harriers.

Winding through the preserve is a public, non-motorized trail system—welcoming walkers, runners, cyclists, horseback riders, cross-country skiers, and snowshoers. The Red Ledges Trail itself spans five miles and connects directly into the Coyote Hollow Trail system, opening up access to a wider recreational network in Wasatch County.

In the spring and summer, the preserve puts on a wildflower show: paintbrush, lupine, longleaf phlox, larkspur, death camas, nodding onion, and prickly pear cactus all make an appearance—along with Utah’s iconic state flower, the sego lily.

Utah Open Lands is a nonprofit land trust that’s been safeguarding Utah’s natural spaces since 1990, with 64,000 acres and counting. Utah Open Lands shares, “We protect land not just for its beauty, but to safeguard what matters most: the clean air we breathe, the water we rely on, and the shared experiences that connect us to the wild places we love—now and for generations to come.“

Utah Open Lands continues to support the long-term stewardship of the Red Ledges Nature Preserve, working alongside Red Ledges to coordinate trail maintenance, manage invasive weeds, and ensure the protection of this incredible open space well into the future.
