Discovering Red Ledges

Jay was already familiar with Heber Valley—he attended college and law school in Utah, and he and his friends regularly ordered scones from Chick’s Café during that time.

For 30 years, we owned a condo in Midway, where we created countless memories with our three kids, who are now grown. We have so many fond memories of skiing, hiking, fishing, boating, and just hanging out in Heber Valley.

In 2008, we saw an ad for Red Ledges in the Wall Street Journal and started riding our bikes from our condo in Midway to Red Ledges to explore homesites and participate in tennis clinics. In 2016, we purchased a homesite—it felt like a dream come true.

Having enjoyed the tennis facilities and Cliff Drysdale programming, we began exploring other Club activities, including the bridge group started by Sandy and Bob Hindy. Soon after, Sandy invited me to try the dance exercise class, which led me to discover the full fitness class schedule.

In 2018, we had finished building our dream home, and I came out to Red Ledges with a couple of girlfriends from California. We decided to attend a wine and cheese tasting event. That evening, I noticed something different about the community: people were genuinely going out of their way to introduce themselves. I called Jay afterward and said, “I found my California country club lifestyle in Heber City.”

Creating Lasting Friendships

In 2020, Jay and I moved our primary residence from Pasadena, CA, to our home in Red Ledges. As an “accidental” Utah resident, I initially made many trips back to California, assuming it would take years for my Red Ledges acquaintances to become true friends. But I was wrong. I have made true friends in every activity I’ve embraced, and at each event, neighbors naturally begin planning additional activities together.

It’s easy to ask the people you meet at your spin class if anyone wants to go on a bike ride the next day. During these meetups, I’m surprised by the number of “six degrees of separation” stories I’ve uncovered between our Utah neighbors and my friends back in California.

Our friendships within the community have extended to activities such as traveling to Portugal with neighbors, hosting block parties, sharing baby equipment and toys as grandchildren visit, and picking up packages while neighbors are out of town.

When I broke some of my ribs and punctured a lung, the friends I’d made went out of their way to help. Between the caring notes and many offers of support, I knew that my neighbors truly cared about our well-being.

National and Local Traditions

The Club has an event or celebration for nearly every local and national tradition. They host watch parties for national gatherings like Super Bowl Sunday and the Oscars.

I think some of the Club’s unique local events are extra special:

  • Shop Local events in Midway
  • Art gallery and museum tours in Park City and Salt Lake City
  • Skating at the Midway Ice Rink
  • Organized trips to events like the Wasatch County Rodeo and Skijoring (where a skier is pulled through a snow-covered course behind a horse and rider)

There are also many traditions specific to our community, such as Friday Nights at Red Ledges (FNRL), hosted at Juniper Grill, and the Annual Summer Concert Series, held at the Golf Park. Both series include entertainment, music, food, and fun with neighbors.

See You at The Club

I honestly do almost everything on the event calendar, except golf. The golfing community at Red Ledges is very social, and if I played golf, I’d have to give up sleeping. The Club calendar keeps me that busy! Some days, I’m out from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., attending yoga classes, playing tennis and pickleball, bridge, and taking in wine tastings at Juniper Grill.

While it was hard to move away from my roots, family, and long-time friends, to my surprise, being a resident of Red Ledges is TOO MUCH FUN! I’m still very much connected to my California friends, but I’m so happy (and healthier) to be in Red Ledges, surrounded by active, intelligent, and thoughtful people.
