Meet the Golf Staff

The prestigious Jim McLean Golf School includes winter training facilities as well as state of the art golf simulator. Our golf instruction center is now located at the practice facility of the Red Ledges Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Jim McLean Golf Schools are famous for providing an enhanced learning environment for every student which enables them to rapidly understand concepts for improving their golf swing. Golf lessons are available for members and non-members.

Jon Paupore

Director of Instruction

Selected by Jim McLean as the Director of Instruction for the school at Red Ledges in April 2010, Jon joins an elite team of the finest golf instructors in the world. Jon has worked with golfers of every skill level, from the best players in the world to first-timers and juniors. He has developed training programs that maximize the enjoyment of men, women, and junior golfers while enhancing their understanding of their game.

Derek Butts

Jim McLean Master Instructor

Derek joined the Jim McLean Golf School at Red Ledges in May 2011 after finishing the Jim McLean Instructor Certification in Doral, Florida. Derek started his golf career by competing in the U.S. Junior Amateur and with collegiate competition at Drake University alongside Former Masters Champion Zach Johnson. Upon graduation he turned professional and qualified for various mini-tours, including the Dakota Tour, Golden Bear Tour and Gateway Tour for three years. After that he worked at Jack Nicklaus’ private golf course, The Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Florida, where he worked as a teaching professional and assistant golf professional.

JR Cummings

Jim McLean Lead Master Instructor

JR joined Red Ledges in March 2011. His golf career started at a young age competing in the Utah Junior Golf Association and the Utah Golf Association, as well as competing at the college level with Dixie State University. After college, he continued to play competitively as an amateur while working in the Structural Engineering field. After years of competitive play, the passion of the game brought him to Red Ledges where he is now a Lead Master Instructor and the 1st Assistant Golf Professional. He has experience working with all ages and all levels of playing abilities.

Nate Olson

Jim McLean Lead Master Instructor

Nate joined the Jim McLean Golf School at Red Ledges in May of 2014 and now works as Lead Master Instructor. Nate has developed expansive experience working with adults & juniors of all abilities. Nate specializes in hosting a variety of junior golf instruction, training, and coaching programs – from beginners to competitive players striving to play at the next level. His programs focus on learning how and what to practice while still enjoying the game. Nate also has an extensive background as a competitive junior golf ambassador, completing his 10th season as Head Golf Coach for Boys/Girls teams for Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City and is currently working towards PGA Membership as a PGA Associate.

Aaron Purviance

Jim McLean Lead Instructor

Aaron joined the Red Ledges team in 2018 after he graduated from Methodist University in the PGA program. He played golf on the collegiate level as an All American and is a 2x DIII National Champion. Aaron is a lead instructor and has a deep passion for teaching and playing. Aaron has won on the professional level in mini tours and Utah PGA section events. In 2021, Aaron won the 2021 Utah Assistant Player of the Year. He works with students off all skill levels and ages.
